Kanoodle Party, the giant edition of the Kanoodle puzzle game by Educational Insights, floats in pool water because its blow-molded pieces are hollow and its board traps air beneath an outer flange.

Yes, I brought the giant new Kanoodle Party edition (affiliate link) of the classic Kanoodle puzzle game out to the pool just to confirm something that was splashing away at my summer instincts. YES, the JUMBO Kanoodle game just launched by Educational Insights indeed FLOATS.

One note: the challenge booklet is not waterproof and the game is not a flotation device. I am making zero claims about safety here. I'm just a guy giving an independent opinion after testing the game in my pool.

Why Kanoodle Party Floats: A Toy and Game Designer Explains Blow Molding

Okay, so how in the world does this version stay afloat? Here's the product development geek-out — I've spent 30 years designing toys, so I can't help myself. The Kanoodle pieces (officially called noodles) are created in the factory through a process called blow molding. In a factory, plastic resin is melted into a mold and air is literally blown into the mold to fill whatever shape is being made. Think of a milk jug. It's like that.

Because the board has areas on the bottom that raise above the surface of the pool water and the board has an outside wall, air is trapped underneath the board....and presto!

Poolside Checklist

My checklist: SPF, the Kanoodle Party puzzle game, and a plastic cup for poolside Diet Coke. Since the challenge booklet is not waterproof, I'd say head to my YouTube channel and use some challenges from Kanoodle Ultimate Champion as your guide. Since the Kanoodle Party board has the same layout as classic Kanoodle, they'll work.
